Review:
When a friend of mine recommended this mini TV series to me, I didn't know what I was getting into. I don't know anything about chess, but giving this show a chance was not a disappointment. The Queen's Gambit was fascinating to watch as you see Beth Harmon use her genius abilities to outsmart the national and state champion chess players. As you see Beth quickly rise to the top in her success, you also notice how her life slowly spirals out of control with her constant dependency on tranquilizer pills and alcohol. Although the ending was predictable, the development of Beth's character going through the high and low points of her life kept me engaged in the story.
It was also intriguing to see how differently women and men lived in the 1960s. If I could change one thing in the story, I would love to see one last interaction between Beth and her mentor, Mr. Shaibel, after Beth became a well-recognized chess player. It was a missed opportunity that I'm sure other fans would have liked to see as Mr. Shaibel was the person who introduced and supported Beth throughout her chess career.
Yess this show is so good! I am not a fan of chess nor even know how to play it, but it was so interesting to watch! The storyline of Beth is very intriguing and I love when she is able to like imagine the chess board on the ceiling and she practices with herself. I also do wish we got to see Mr. Shaibel again since he was truly the one who helped her start this passion of hers. That would've been amazing.
